I know how you feel, Karen. If I could, I would put some flags on graves in
Yellow Creek and Georgetown. I love that you do that!

Chapel Hill is the only cemetery I know of around here that goes such great
extremes. All local cemeteries of any size get small flags on individual
veteran graves - I believe put on by groups like Boy Scouts. They do not do
tiny little country cemeteries so today I took two flags out to "my" Florence
Station cemetery. There are all of four veterans buried there - one from the
Civil War; one from World War I (a relative of mine); one man I knew who was in
World War II; and now someone who was a childhood neighbor a few years older
than me. The "newer" two burials always have flags from their families - but
I always try to take flags each year for the older two... No one probably even
notices them except my family but I feel better for doing it.

Wow. That sounds amazing, Karen. I wonder if anything like that is ever done
out at Oakland. Over here we do flags on a much smaller cemetery on individual
graves but nothing big. I wish I lived close to my veteran relatives and
ancestors. I can only hope that someone decorates their graves wherever they
are.

Cemetery this weekend. Even if you think you don't know one person buried
there, I promise you that you do. The small flags have been on individual
military markers several days already and today the big flags lining both sides
of all the "roads" are already up and blowing in the breeze. The cemetery is
awash in flowers. It is truly a wonderful site and we are fortunate to have
the weather co-operate this year. I'm not sure about today or tomorrow, but
if you drive thru on Monday, be sure to go in the main entrance (Highway 26)
and someone will hand you an amazing pamphlet that lists EVERY veteran buried
there BY YEAR... It's very sobering just to see the sheer number of them.
Reading thru the list, you will be amazed at names that you recognize. You
might also want to stop and visit the Veteran's Court of Honor - a small area
honoring veterans. (P.S. Link below. There is now a statue there of a small
child welcoming Daddy home that is very touching and I don't think that shows
in these pictures.)
