Hi,
Have you ever wondered how to get NVDA to say words like "Abhaile" or
abreviations like "etc."?
Well NVDA has a good solution!
1. Open the NVDA menu with Insert+n
2. Press right-arrow on preferences and
3. Press up-arrow a few times to get to "Speech Dictionaries" submenu
4. Press right-arrow and choose Default if you want to make this a
permanent change.
5. Tab once and press "add" to make a new entry.
A quick way to do all that is NVDA+n and then p>d>d>a
Tab around this dialog and you will see that you put in the actual word in
the first field, called the "Pattern". Then put a series of characters to
make NVDA speak the sound you want in the "replacement" field.
For example with "Abhaile". This is an Irish word and so there is no English
way of spelling it.
I entered "a wahlyuh" to get the right sound. Note that I had to make two
words to get the right emphasis!
Pressing OK to close the dialog and another OK to close the dictionary (both
OK selections are important!) and the correction is permanent.
I have a bit of work to make sure that "etc" is only forced into "etcetera"
when the three letters are isolated. I gave the pattern a leading space as
in " etc" and this wins for most situations. Otherwise it was making a
strange word out of "petcare"! as "petceteraare".
You can make your changes temporary or confined only to a particular voice.
