Hi All.
This is the Project I'm working as the assistive Technology Officer on.
I just thought I'd share the information here, the contact details are below.
We are delighted to announce our new Employment Vision Project, The aims of the
project are;
• To support people who are blind and vision impaired to access
meaningful employment, improve their career progression opportunities “in
work†or improve employment outcomes through education and training.
• To support potential employers to providing employment for
people who are blind and vision impaired by accessing our skilled project
participants.
Even with a high level of qualifications, objectiveresearch conducted by AHEAD
found that the number of students with disabilities in higher education overall
rose 4% year on year, however blind/visually impaired students participating
fell 10% year on year. As a result, people who are blind and vision impaired
are underrepresented in the workforce and in particular higher paid employment.
While there are supports in place to address academic needs in education a more
holistic approach is required to ensure retention in education and progression
to meaningful employment.
The project, enabled by Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind’s successful
application for Pobal funding in May 2021, will address the current knowledge,
services, and experience gap for employers and employees.
This Project, which is a natural development from a previous IGDB successful
piolet employment project and a collaboration with Fighting Blindness project,
‘Foundations’ course, will address the needs of people experiencing
difficulty obtaining work.
Funding was awarded in August 2021 and was drawn down in November 2021 at which
point the recruitment began. This funding has facilitated four part-time
skilled roles to support the implementation of this project.
Following the advertisements of part time roles in December 21 and January 22
we have seen the successful recruitment of two new highly skilled part time
officers and the secondment of one part time current staff member to manage the
project to date.
We are now rolling out our publicity campaign and recruiting participants.
Following this we will be engaging with employers and promoting the value and
skills of the employees.
Taking a solution focused approach, we will identify employers who are looking
for specific skills and support the potential employees who are ‘work
ready’ and require an opportunity. We will work with the employer and
alleviate any concerns and misrepresentations they may have.
Support will be offered to people who require further training or education or
those who are considering self-employment The project will facilitate 20
participants throughout the country to address various barriers to employment
while implementing individualised plans for each participant to succeed.
