Title: Sent Items missing
In Outlook under Tools/Options/Email Options/Message handling there is a checkbox for keeping a copy of messages in the sent items folder.  I believe that if this was not checked then there is no way to get to those messages.  That is of course if you don't have journaling, etc. turned on.

Has anyone ever had a user that suddenly had his sent items stop recording what he was sending – he had some people received the emails that he sent – but others in the TO box did not make it to their destination and there is no record of the email being sent -  how does one recover those items?
