Database growing (16Gb) despite mailbox sizes

Hi all,
Long time listener...
I have a customer whose PRIV1.EDB has grown to 16Gb. The thing is the
mailboxes only add up to 3Gb, if you add them according to the Mailbox
sizes in Exchange Manager.
The system is an SBS system, and right now, under duress to get the
thing going again, Im going to exmerge the data, clear the current DB,
restart the store and let it create a new one, and exmerge the data into
the new store.
My questions are:
1) Does anyone know about this mysterious, and massive growth of the DB
as explained above?
2) Anyone got any better idea's?
