Yes I plan on upgrading to backoffice 2003 once we get a new server. Any I
have a trendnet router with NAT enabled. We also run MS proxy 2 for internet
sharing.

What do you have in-place, logically in-front of your Exchange server?
Firewall?
Are you planning on upgrading soon? Microsoft will not support 5.5 forever.
