To: Members & Friends of the East Valley Astronomy Club

The East Valley Astronomy Club will conduct our monthly general meeting next
Friday evening - October 18th.  The meeting will take place in the usual
location - the Shakespeare room at the Southeast Regional Library in
Gilbert, beginning at 7:30 pm.  Our meetings are always a terrific
opportunity to discuss the latest in astronomy with like-minded friends.
They are also a stellar opportunity to make some new friends and
acquaintances.

This month's featured speaker is Dr. Dennis Zaritsky a Professor in the
Department of Astronomy at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and the
Deputy Director of the Steward Observatory.  Dr. Zaritsky spoke to EVAC in
April of 2018 about "missing" baryonic matter in the universe and efforts to
find it.  We are excited to have him return this month.  Dennis's areas of
investigation focus on extragalactic astronomy and cosmology.  Highlights of
his work include the first measurements of dark matter masses of individual
galaxies, the first spatially complete stellar census of the Magellanic
Clouds, the largest published survey of galaxy clusters at the time, the
discovery of direct evidence for dark matter based on the study of colliding
galaxy clusters, and the discovery of a unifying relationship for the
structure of all galaxies.  In his spare time Dr. Zaritsky is principal
investigator for the Giant Magellan Telescope project which will be the
subject of his presentation at this month's meeting.  This promises to be a
discussion you will not want to miss.

As a reminder, there are three special events coming up over the next few
months.  Mark your calendars and hold the dates!

*       The EVAC sponsored All Arizona Star Party will be held at the
Hovatter (abandoned) Airfield on the weekend of 25-27 October.  See this
month's newsletter for more details.
*       The field trip to the University of Arizona's Richard F. Caris
Mirror Laboratory on 8 November.  There may be a few tickets left, make sure
to see Ken Milward at the October meeting.
*       The annual club Christmas party will be held in December - more
information to follow.

We are still accepting nominations for the slate of 2020 officers.  Being an
officer for the one year term is a rewarding experience helping to shape
future club activities, and getting to know many members much better.  The
time required is not significant, so please consider "giving back" to the
club for the many benefits and opportunities we all enjoy.  Other
opportunities to get involved in fun and gratifying activities include
volunteering at the observatory - GRCO, or helping with our public and
school star parties.  For more information, or to volunteer, please see
