The East Valley Astronomy Club will conduct our May meeting this Friday
evening - May 18th. The meeting will take place in the usual location - the
Shakespeare room at the Southeast Regional Library in Gilbert, beginning at
7:30 pm. This month's meeting will include club business, member
presentations, our featured speaker, as well as an opportunity to catch up
with friends, and meet some new astronomers.
Our featured speaker will be Dr. Jim Bell, professor in the School of Earth
& Space Exploration at Arizona State University, and President of the Board
of Directors of The Planetary Society. His current research focuses on the
use of remote sensing imaging and spectroscopy, and he is the author of many
popular science books related to space exploration.
Dr. Bell's talk this Friday will be "The Interstellar Age" and cover the 40
year ongoing missions of NASA's Voyager probes. When the missions began,
the outer planets were merely pinpoints of light. As a result of the
Voyagers, we became aware of the amazements of the planets Jupiter, Saturn,
Uranus, Neptune with their collections of rings and moons. Their missions
endure today as both continue to explore and transmit data on the space
environment beyond the planets and between the stars. Through the Voyagers,
and their discoveries, we have all entered the interstellar age. This will
be a remarkable talk as an example of what ingenuity and determination can
deliver from the hands of a few determined scientists and engineers.
