Excluded from grade school
Haaretz - August 27, 2004

Is the education system closing social gaps - or is it just widening
them?

The education system was under a particularly intense media spotlight
this week with the publication of the report by the Adva Center social
advocacy organization on the matriculation achievements of students
from economically disadvantaged homes versus those from affluent ones.

The report stated that 63 percent of students in well-to-do communities
received matriculation certificates as opposed to 49 percent of those
living in development towns, 41 percent among the Druze population, 36
percent among the Arabs and 26 percent among the Bedouin. It also
highlighted the widening gap between the demands of the matriculation
certificates and those of the universities. The system had taken a
beating just a few days earlier with the publication of other test
results. And at the end of the week, the Education Ministry announced a
"revolution" - a shorter school week.
