The education system was under a particularly intense media spotlight this week with the publication of the report by the Adva Center social advocacy organization on the matriculation achievements of students from economically disadvantaged homes versus those from affluent ones. The report stated that 63 percent of students in well-to-do communities received matriculation certificates as opposed to 49 percent of those living in development towns, 41 percent among the Druze population, 36 percent among the Arabs and 26 percent among the Bedouin. It also highlighted the widening gap between the demands of the matriculation certificates and those of the universities. The system had taken a beating just a few days earlier with the publication of other test results. And at the end of the week, the Education Ministry announced a "revolution" - a shorter school week.
