Drafts are an absolute must. In fact, any piece of writing, from a novice effort at a paragraph to a complete project should be a process. Just as we brainstorm and then organize our thoughts on paper before writing a paragraph or essay, and then correct our first draft on the way to our final product, a project must also reflect this sort of process.

In fact, we should be guiding our pupils with step by step instructions while doing projects, rather that just giving them a topic and collecting the final products. If we correct their drafts as part of the process, we encourage them to produce something of their own, with us in the background providing support as needed. A natural byproduct of this sort of process is a vast reduction in plagiarized work, because with this sort of process it is much easier to spot work that is not theirs, for we already know what kind of English they are capable of producing in a first draft.
