Dear Iris,
Why not share this with the whole list? It is a lovely activity!

Shalom
One of the things I do in class which has proven to be very successful is an
activity which I call note taking or jotting down.

I tell the students that I am going to read or tell them something. The
contents can be anything the teacher wants. What they have to do is write
down notes. We then discuss that they can do this by focusing on the wh's.
They listen and then we write what they have got on the board.

I usually use this as a spring board for writing a report.

All the best
Iris.

In addition to including drafts as an integral part of the work handed in,
and Googling (which is something we can only do AFTER the work has been
handed in and we feel it is not original - playing "cops and robbers") ,
another thing that we, as teachers, must not neglect is to teach our kids
how to paraphrase and take notes. This is NOT an easy thing to do, and we
need to work on it a LOT, but if we are efficient and persistent, they learn
a skill that will serve them well both now, and in the future.
