**** ETNI on the web http://www.etni.org.il http://www.etni.org **** To the wonderful and dedicated teachers at ETNI - I hope that our good friend, Lauren Ornstein, won't mind my responding to herkind words concerning the Myrtle Wreath Award given by the Hadassah Greater Washington D.C. Chapter to the Books for Israel Project. As some of your are probably already well aware, "B4i" is at this point an international, all-volunteer, grassroots effort and we are grateful to the Greater Washington D.C. Hadassah Chapter for their recognition. Awards are always nice to receive, in particular as they bring increased credibility, which, in turn, we use as the only form of currency this grassroots project owns to interest hopefully a wider circle of synagogues, churches, community centers, schools and individual book donors to join us from all over the U.S., England and -- we hope someday soon! -- Canada and Australia as well. However, awards can also be "not" nice -- or perhaps a better word is inadequate -- in the sense that they name individuals as the representatives of the effort they seek to acknowlege. It is absolutely true that my dearly beloved sister, Jade Bar-Shalom, co-founded this effort with me in 2002. It is also absolutely true that without the hours of work put into the Project each week by my brother-in-law, Ilan Bar-Shalom, the Project would be largelywithout the crucial voice that its website provides, that it would have many less schools participating in it, as it is through his direct efforts that the recruitment and technical inclusion (by way of web and e-mail assistance) that of a number of our school clusters has been made feasible, and that some of the snarls it has encountered would never have been made straight, as Ilan, besides being our completely indispensable web designer, is also our completely indispensable lead troubleshooter. It is also absolutely true that without the excellent and wonderful efforts of the English teachers of Israel who have stepped forward to join us and who have put in their time, energy and talents to "bootstrap" their schools and their regions along, making English literature more accessible to their students and the students of schools in their areas, this whole thing would be a nice idea with no place to call home. And our home is Israel. Wherever our donated books come from, New York, New Jersey, Greater Washington, Arizona, Florida, Colorado, Idaho, Massachusetts,London -- they are sent with love, as a material manifestation that there are a lot of people outside our little country who understand and appreciate your efforts, who understand what the people of Israel are going through and want to help, and who understand and appreciate how difficult it is for teachers to teach and students to learn when budgets are low and the threat level high. We are with you, and we thank you for all that you do.
