Where Rushdie meets Twain, Fitzgerald
Chicago Sun-Times - July 3, 2006

One's a poetic 17th century French soldier whose unusually large nose stalls his love life.

The other is a 1970s girl-crazy teenage nerd haunted by countless bus rides from hell, dicey dodgeball games and drunken prom dates.

Some English teachers might not think the misadventures of "Freaks and Geeks" creator Paul Feig hold a light to Cyrano de Bergerac's woes.
But both Edmond Rostand's acclaimed play and Feig's 2002 memoir Kick Me: Adventures in Adolescence are required summer reading in two different levels of English classes at New Trier High School, illustrating how today's educators keep summer reading lists interesting and relevant by placing strong emphasis on the classic and contemporary.

"We feel all the books on our summer reading lists will challenge the students and keep them reading through the summer," said John Cadwell, the North Shore school's English department chairman. "The bottom line is we want students to enjoy, practice and process reading."
New Trier has striven to keep its summer reading list eclectic since initiating the program 12 years ago, Cadwell said.
