Yesterday, the annual ceremony in memory of Korczak, Steffa, staff and the
orphans was held at Yad Vashem. I translated and read this poem as part of
my speech at the Korczak memorial in the JNF forest for the Polish Jews.
On the way
to the fifth of August -
the autumn leaves were pale
as was the appearance of the old doctor.
The trees bowed their heads to the convoy
that moved
like a coffin -
they knew not that they were a funeral procession.
Only two tall figures
concealed their secret,
the first secret -
and the final day of the procession.
