That display! The only part of woodcock I've seen is his tail
scrambling(can a woodcock scramble? ) away in a refuge on the Eastern Shore
of Virginia.
I think I heard its *Peent*. I raced the sun all the way up to Mt. Mitchell
once to see one, timing my arrival for sunset. I parked at that point
halfway up
the road to the top, got out of the car. The sun is sliding out of sight. I
feel that I'm being stared at and turning find three deer giving me the
once over.
We stand looking at each other for a long time, then they whoosh away. The
sun is gone. I get in the car to descend. suddenly what looks like a small
ghost
both arms lifted, appears in the headlights; an owl. Appearing to be all
white, I remember seeing legs and wings lifted and spread like a traffic
cop.
I screeched on the brakes. No one behind me. It got hold of some kind of
vision and flew away. Nothing else on the way home but i was altered, the
way we always are being part of nature. Gwenda LedBetter
