Hello Birding Friends,
Sorry for the delay in reporting. A crowd of 35 came out for the first Blue
Ridge Audubon bird outing of 2023 on January 7 at the Beaver Lake Bird
Sanctuary. It was cold, but not unreasonably so. Vicky Burke with Ventures
Birding and I led. We ended the morning with 22 species but with so many
people it was hard for everyone to get on all the birds - I missed a number
on the list below. Some friends would probably guess that I was talking.
Perhaps the highlight was the golf course pond, across Merrimon Avenue -
everyone survived the crossing. A male Bufflehead showed off his beautiful
plumage. After admiring this nice find, Vicky spotted a Red-shouldered Hawk
and a Belted Kingfisher in trees across the pond. Everyone got great views
of all 3 species thanks to Vicky carrying her telescope.
