About 12-15 birders attended the regular first Saturday of the month bird walk at the Beaver Lake Bird Sanctuary, led by Janie Owens. The weather was quite cold early but warmed up as the group emerged into the sun along the lake. A swing through the boardwalk yielded few birds, not even many of the regulars. The Eastern Screech owl was in her box but dropped down before everyone could get a look. A Great-blue Heron, apparently an aspiring model, posed for photographs before exiting, runway left. As the group left the Sanctuary proper and headed for the lake, the sun came out and so did the birds. We were treated to 4 species of woodpeckers, including at least 3 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. Several Brown-headed Nuthatches, a Beaver Lake favorite, showed off for the group. Ducks were in short supply but a small flock of Ring-necked Ducks were present. The full list follows.
