Here are my summaries and reactions to the three power point articles! Summary: Power Point is NOT Evil This article made reference to Tom Creed's article on power point. Tom Rocklin realizes that talking about pedagogical value is complex. He feels that technology can support both good and bad teaching depending on how it's used. He goes on to use an example of a classroom and how technology with power point can could be used. Slides and handouts were used to help the students understand the difference between random assignment and random selection. The class also incorporated a group project and many other slides that were borrowed and created. He sums this article up by saying this was a good use of power point and technology in the classroom Reaction: I agree with Tom Rocklin. I think power point can be used very effectively. If you use it with the view point to help the learners than you can create it to do so. I think this might be easier with students at the elementary level. Students would get bored and let you know it if you just use power point to help yourself lecture. I never realized all that power point could do and I think it can really enhance a lesson for those with visual needs. Summary: Power Point No, Cyberspace Yes This article by Tom Creed voices his concern with the negative aspects of power point. He expresses his opinion throughout the article. He feels that using power point makes the lesson very teacher centered and not student centered. He also believes that by using a power point lesson to lecture the teacher isn't getting feedback about what the students are gaining from the lesson. Creed also thinks that power point can require expensive equipment that not all schools can afford or that may work at all times. The name itself bothers Creed since it implies that the person with the point has all the power. He believes it is more of a selling tool than a teaching tool. Reaction: My first reaction or better yet a question is has Tom Creed ever taught kids in a school? If so, than maybe he has experiences to make these judgments. If not, then I can understand his confusion. Power Point can't be something that teachers just put up and expect students to learn from. I agree there. However I don't believe that is the use most teachers use it for. You can use it as a form of note taking that is more appealing to students to keep their interest but you would still do questioning to make sure they understand what is being taught. I also believe that students can use power point themselves to demonstrate what they have learned about a topic. They can in turn teach their peers a lesson to bring it to their level. Sometimes students are better teachers than teachers are since they know how to connect at their peers level. I don't believe power point should be used everyday and all the time. There is a certain time and place for it to be used correctly. Summary: Friends Don't let friends use power point This article gave many reasons why to not use power point. These include the fact that they are a monopoly, it's inescapable, monotonous and it discourages questioning to name a few. The author is upset that there really isn't a good alternative to power point. He also is tired of seeing the same thing at all the conferences he attends. Lastly it doesn't allow for a lot of communication between the presenter and the listener. Reaction: I agree that the same look over and over again could get really boring. I also now know from this class that there is so much you can do with power point that there really isn't a good reason to have them all look the same. I do also believe that the use of power point in the working/business world is much different from the classroom. Overall, I think power point just like anything else can be overused or used poorly! It is up to the educator to use it correctly for the students in which they are responsible for! Everyone person is different and has different uses for things! It was interesting though to read other points of view that I really hadn't thought about or encountered much before!
