I'm the same as you, June. I love pottering about but am pretty sure that
the seedling I planted last week probably gets weeded out the next! Chris
does the heavy work, like the grass-cutting, hedge trimming, but I do the
shrub pruning, weeding, planting f bedding plants and bulbs etc. Having a
dog means we'll never have a beautiful garden but on a sunny day, there is
little I like so much as to get out there and potter about.

Whereas I enjoy every book about gardening, fiction or otherwise, and really
enjoy gardening as well. However, that's not to say my gardening skills are
good - I probably leave loads of weeds and lift plenty of plants, but I just
love being outside. And I particularly enjoy books that combine gardening
with cooking, so Nigel Slater's veg books are fascinating. However, the book
that set me off many years ago was Hovel in the Hills by Elizabeth West - at
least, I think it was Elizabeth. She and her husband moved to smallholding
in Wales, and shortly after we moved to a smallholding in an equally remote
part of Northumberland, 1500 feet above sea level, with about 90 growing
days a year. But thanks to her tales of generators and wells we took the
right decisions (for us) and managed to get mains electricity and a good,
reliable underground spring of beautiful fresh water. I expect the book is
very dated now, but it was a lovely read at the time.

Shell, I am no good in the garden but also love books about gardens, fiction
that is, not gardening manuals. If you erfume from Provence by Winifred
Fortescue and Elizabeth and her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim are
wonderful. The sequel to the latter, a Solitary Summer, I found
disappointing though. Clare
