Hi Terri,

If your cursor is at the beginning of the word, press Shift + Ctrl + Right 
arrow to highlight the word, then delete.

If at the end of a word, use left arrow.

Not sure about screen reader use, but double clicking left mouse button 
anywhere in a word will highlight it also.
