Please excuse this being a bit of topic but, because braille literacy matters to all of us! If you weren't there last night, you can still participate. There is an online auction to support braille literacy and it is still going on. As of yesterday there was still adaptive technology that had not been bid on. There are also many other great experiences and items. The auction only goes through June 28th, so go now! To participate go to: http://www.cmarket.com/catalog/landingPage.do?vhost=nbp Last night in Boston there was a program dedicated to raising awareness and funds for a very important cause near and dear to all of our hearts, Braille Literacy. National Braille Press http://www.nbp.org <http://www.nbp.org/> has undertaken the goal of getting every family with a pre-school blind child in the US a braille book bag. This contains age appropriate twin (print books with clear braille pages) vision books as well as other braille skill building items, and information on available services, etc. The goal is obvious, a child exposed to reading and braille at a young age can become as efficient and comfortable with reading as any of their sighted peers. The funds raised will support the Press's children's literacy programs, particularly <http://www.nbp.org/ic/nbp/readbooks/index.html?id=b5DfIPE2> ReadBooks! Because Braille Matters. This landmark outreach program promotes braille literacy by seeking out every family with a blind preschool-aged child and providing print/braille books and advocacy materials that families can read together. Reading begins at home, at the earliest age. Ken Cullers, the blind astrophysicist that is Director of Research and Development at SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and who was the basis for the Carl Sagan book CONTACT and movie of the same name with Jodie Foster, was the key note speaker. Many print book publishers were in attendance, as were many other organizations including Boston Celtics ownership, NBA great Bob Cousey and current Player Walter McCarty. But young braille reading adults stole the show with their presentations as well as a short film feturing very accomplished blind adults with rich full lives talking about what braille has meant to them. The NBA is including braille readers in their READ TO ACHEIVE literacy campaign and NBA players may well be visiting mainstream classrooms and reading centers with braille readers as well as schools for the blind so that young braille readers can participate. for more information on the READ TO ACHIEVE PROGRAM go to http://www.nba.com/community/ . If you have an NBA franchise in your community be proactive and contact them about where and how they may be able to include braille readers in this great program. But be courteous and respectful, all of these players and teams are donating their most precious asset, their time! They are approached by so many worthy causes and give of themselves. Again thanks for your patience. Sincerely, Neal Kuniansky Email: Neal@xxxxxxxxxx
