First...thanks Sterling for correcting me on the appropriate bar....you're right. And please realize I was responding to a sort of can I put this together and see if it works scenario, not should I use the jerry rig for lots of unicorn driving. Sort of like you can piece together a tandem, but once you really get into it, you need to get the proper equipment sorted out. If a tendem leader pulls, he is pulling on the harness of the wheeler and the britching on the wheeler will tighten and the wheeler will often react by pulling backwards. The hitch isn't really designed to add another pulling horse for power, it was set up to allow 1 horse to be out of use and still get him someplace, or to show off how well you can drive and train horses. (Do you know that a law prohibiting the rental of a tandem to university students is still on the books in Oxford, England?) Unicorns were essentially what you got if, with a four in hand, you lost a horse. You still have the heavy carriage, and guests or luggage or mail or what ever, to get somewhere and you need 3 horses pulling to do that job. Rachel in BC (glad to have my computer back after several days without power due to unbelievable wind and rain) But your leader needs to be able to pull every now and again unlike the tandem leader who really doesn't do more than tighten the traces.
