Hi all,

Remember me......I'm way up north and don't have access to trainers or other
drivers I trust so I'm trying to learn the best way possible through books
and this list. I'm coming to the list to find out if this is crap or not!
I was at a riding clinic and was discussing driving with another person. He
was telling me about his method for cart training his young animals when he
doesn't have a well trained animal to hook up with (my situation).

He took a LITTLE, old car that still functioned, had someone weld shafts to
the frame and added a *bar* across the front of the shafts. Then he removed
the windshield of this fully functioning car. He said he harnesses up his
animal, puts them in the shafts, *closes* the bar across the front and runs
the reins through the ex-windshield back to himself in the driver's seat.
His explanation for the bar was that if they had a *freak out* and anything
on the harness broke the animal would not be able to *escape* the *box*.
Then he starts driving in SLOW gears. The idea is NOT to run the animal
over but to gently encourage it forward (ground training should obviously be
done before). Once it's moving calmly forward he puts the vehicle in
neutral and allows the animal to pull it. When he wants to slow the vehicle
he can apply brakes to prevent it pushing the animal forward, ie: on a
downhill......(according to him anyway!)

He says it's very safe because he can completely control the car, ie: steer,
brake, signal, honk, etc so he can take it anywhere. He says it trains the
animal without leaving him in the dangerous postion of being in a cart with
a beginner animal.

I'm definitely interested in any additional safety considering I'm wary of
hooking a beginner animal up to a cart when I'm a beginner driver BUT is
this for real?? Have any of you heard of anything like this? What do you
think; worth trying or a complete hoax?

Cindy
