Isn't there some sort of chemical reaction, science
thing, where hot water freezes faster than cold or
just cool water? I wanted to run the hot water hose
to the barn, and my husband said it was a waste of
time because water will freeze faster if you start
with hot.
So our water is cool and gets cold, but does take a
while to freeze up.
A rubber mallet is pretty good for loosening the ice
build up on sides and bottom. We use the Fortiflex
buckets, so it does all slip out when loosened.
Rubber mallet has a bigger face for impact, and
doesn't seem to crack thru the plastic like a metal
hammer. Fortiflex does seem to take the abuse best of
all the plastics and blue is the toughest color. Not
sure why, but black Fortiflex are the worst of the
colors. Only got two winters out of black, while some
of the blue are over 10 years old. Green and bright
pink also are pretty tough. Haven't used any of the
other colors.
The rubbery black Fortex just don't make it easy
when the ice grabs the string fibers!!! What a job to
clean the ice out of those. No patience when I get
really cold. I use my old Fortex buckets for storing
stuff now.
Heated bucket for the dog can't take the wind.
Still freezes, so we water her in the house. Cats
have to drink quickly, because their dish freezes
pretty fast.
No snow cover here, is driving the cold down.
Outside pipes are freezing in the ground. Any pipes
running under a road or driven over, better be pretty
deep! Frost free hydrants better be about 8ft down
and protected too!
I have noticed how MUCH thirstier horses are if they
see you have to carry water to them!! The five gallon
horse immediatly needs 10 gallons and it multiplies
geometrically from there!
