Hi Laura, I hold my reins like that as well. I've tried other
methods, but in the end I have the most finesse and best contact when
I drive like I ride. I have never tried Achenbach, no one close by to
teach me. Ok... truth... NO MONEY TO BE TAUGHT!!! I keep planning to
self teach the method, maybe I'll ask for the book for Christmas.
Better yet a video tape. I have some weird learning thing where I
don't translate written instruction overly well without immense
effort. Show me once and I've got it, write it down it takes me an
hour just to figure it out.

Anyhow, my ponies go much better when I hold my reins just like when
I ride. I have much more subtlety with my hands in that position. The
thing that makes my hands ache is the whip. I have made my own out of
graphite fishing rods. I absolutely cannot carry a regular whip for
any length of time. My hands fall apart after just a few minutes from
the weight of a normal whip.

I didn't watch the program. I kinda figured it would be super
commercialized. It's reality TV meets horses. I wish they would show
some honest CDE driving. I think people would love it if they got a
chance to see it. I'm not sure why they think they have to dress it
up with a whole bunch of drama.
