I could tell from the photo he was a Lance Corporal but more than likely he
would have been promoted later so that doesnt really help a lot. A couple
of other things. The stick he is holding was called a swagger stick and was
carried by NCOs - non commissioned officers - those who worked their way up
through the ranks. The braid on his left shoulder was a lanyard often they
would have something attached kept in the pocket like a pocket knife etc.
