Wow, your solution is nice! However this may make other normal hyphens
in English doesn't work as intended.
I would say it's not possible to control this via CSS, because this is a
very
specific layout issue. Usually problems of this kind can be solved via CSS;
StackOverflow guys give symbol replacement answers for a reason.
