[dokuwiki] Gzipped attic not accessible?

We have usegzip turned on for our wiki here, so older versions of pages
are gzipped. The problem is that I can't get at those older versions of
files while they're compressed, I have to decompress them for the
relevant entry in the history to work. What's also strange is that it
seems as if only some versions are gzipped -- recent ones aren't, even
though I have usegzip turned on, and it seems as if the changeover is
around the time I moved from the previous version of dokuwiki to the
03-09 release.
Is this the expected behaviour? Should I just go through and gunzip
everything in data/attic?
