Did you check the mime.conf in /conf for the uploaded mime type ?

I just realized that I updated PHP from version 4.x to 5.2. I can’t think of 
any reason that would have broken dokuwiki file uploads, but I’m not
familiar with its innards.

We can and do upload files for other purposes.
