Great work! I will remove the workaround from spellchecker.php again...

Two things we should check:

Does your patch break anything when the aspell developers fix the bug? I guess 
so :-/ Any idea how to circumvent this?

Does it work when aspell is used without the terse mode? (We're sending the '!' 
command in spellchecker to let aspell omit correct words (outputed as *).

Not very high on my to do list ;-) This spellchecker thingy made much more work 
then expected... I need to concentrate on the real bugs again.
