Dear list members,

I wish to produce fully synchronized DTB's of some English tutorial books on North Indian music, and welcome suggestions from members as to how the following symbols could be represented in preparing the source file in .txt form for markup:

1. dot above and dot below the letters s r g m p d n to indicate the upper and lower octaves respectively.

2. dash below r g d n to indicate flattened note and a superscript slash on m to indicate sharp.

3. line above, drawn between two notes to indicate a glide (meend).

4. curved line below two or more notes to indicate that they are to be played or sung to one beat.

5. vertical stroke to indicate the bar line.

6. Tala signs placed above the notes, such as the cross, the figures 2 3 4 etc. and the 0.

7. touched notes (grace notes) before the main note, indicated in print by a small letter placed above and to the left of the main note, and touched note after the main note indicated in print by a small letter placed above and to the right of the main note.

8. The letter x indicating a rest and the "moorki" indicated by placing the affected note within brackets, should present no difficulty as far as I can see.

Suggestions are most welcome and greatly appreciated.

With best wishes
Prof. D.P.M. Weerakkody
