Humanitarian Highlights
Meet our first District Fellow, Dana Brozost-Kelleher! Dana is an early
career journalist who has spent the last several years reporting on social
justice issues. As a DC native passionate about community storytelling,
Dana's fellowship has focused on supporting the work of HumanitiesDC’s Oral
History Collaborative to tell the stories of DC residents. She took the
lead on organizing September’s Coffee Chat event, which featured an oral
history project about the First Latin American Festival on the Mall. "It
was an energizing experience to collaborate on humanities programs that
brought people together and helped us all better connect with one another
and DC," Dana said.

This exciting celebration will have presentations and a moderated panel
discussion with DC residents, who have been working hard to document their
own communities' history & culture. Come learn about new plaques that have
been placed in Georgetown to highlight important African American figures
that shaped the neighborhood, experience the art of the Dap, find out
something new about DC's mural scene. The showcase will feature compelling
projects from Miriam Gusevich, Cory Lee Stowers, Adeshola Akintobi, Rhonda
Henderson, Kamilah Thurmon and Andrena Crockett. See you there!

This event will feature Muslim-American women using humor to challenge
assumptions about appearances and beliefs that shape how they have been
represented. The event will include a panel discussion and Q&A session with
filmmaker Iman Zawahry, stand up comedian Yasmin Elhady and award-winning
artist Aizzah Fatima.

Scholars across the humanities and related fields, researchers, artists,
local organizers and practitioners, and the community-at-large are
invited to apply. Participation of students at all education levels is also
encouraged.
The DC History Conference is an interdisciplinary, community conference
considering the District’s past, present, and future. Since 1973, the
conference organizers have aimed to provide a welcoming, educational, and
stimulating forum for original research on and engagement with the history
of the Washington, DC metropolitan area (including Maryland, Virginia, and
the federal government). The DC History Conference is co-presented by the
DC History Center, DC Public Library, and HumanitiesDC; sponsored by
American University; and organized by a volunteer planning committee.
Recent Events
On October 21st, DC Legacy Project hosted a film screening and book talk
with Alcione Amos, author of Barry Farm-Hillsdale in Anacostia: A Historic
African-American Community. The event explored the history and legacy of
this historically Black community. The DC Legacy Project: Barry
Farm-Hillsdale is dedicated to uplifting the Black-led struggle for land
and housing in DC at an important site of this sacred struggle—the five
remaining buildings of Barry Farm Dwellings.
Weren't able to make this talk but want to learn more? You can catch DC
Legacy Project's next event on October 29th from 1:30pm-4pm at Union
Temple, located at 1225 W Street SE. There will be conversation, film
clips, snacks and a performance of The Junkyard Band!
