Humanitarian Highlights
Here, Ms. Crockett poses at historic Tudor Place, a major landmark of her
project located in Georgetown Heights.
Andrena Crockett is the founder and project manager of the Georgetown
African American Historic Landmark Project (GAAHLP), a program supported by
HumanitiesDC. An alumna of Georgetown University, Crockett returned to her
alma mater in 2015 to sift through archival materials, gather information
and organize some 6,000 descendants of slaves who had been sold by the
university. In 2017, she founded GAAHLP, a collective of concerned
Georgetown community advocates and historians undertaking the task of
honoring the free and enslaved residents by placing markers on
approximately forty 80 historical African American landmarks in Georgetown.

This course, led by Maggie Lemere, will introduce Washingtonians interested
in becoming oral historians to the best practices of doing oral history, to
empower them with the basic tools for developing their style and approach
to preserving DC’s rich past through oral history interviews.

The History of the First Latin American Festival on the Mall: 1989-1990 is
an oral history project that tells the story of how the Latino community
took their culture and music downtown to the Mall. These oral histories
document the personal narratives of the Festival organizers, focusing on
why they decided to take the Festival downtown to the Monument, and how
they sought to bring Latino culture, music and food to mainstream America.

Brick Layers: Cool "Disco Dan" Day
On August 19th we celebrated the life of DANNY HOGG A.K.A. COOL “DISCO”
DAN, the most notorious graffiti artist in the city’s history, on the sixth
anniversary of his passing, and the naming of COOL “DISCO” DAN DAY. Sonics
were provided by DJ RBI, PROFESSOR M, MIKEY VADER, and SCRATCH MASTER K. A
candle lighting was held at dusk followed by a special edition of Brick
Layers, a panel discussion featuring pioneering DC graffiti writers LISA OF
THE WORLD and MISS CHELOVE and moderated by museum curator, Cory Lee
Stowers.
