Dear all, lower doses of SSRIs, e.g. 1-10 mg of fluoxitene, 25 mg sertraline,
10 mg citalopram, etc. routinely reduce anxiety within a day or two, even if
there is no effect on depression; however, this early reduction in anxiety may
represent a loss of the capacity to know feeling: emotional numbing, for some
people. This kicks people with mild depersonalization into a depersonalized
state of greater magnitude, and that may induce a sense of panic, painful in
and of itself. My sense is that SSRIs do not "cause" panic attacks, but for
people with mild depersonalization and complex PTSD it may make that worse for
this reason. This is a speculation based upon clinical experience. I'm not
aware of any papers showing changes in depersonalization on an neurologic basis
with SSRI use. Best, Rich
