Sure you have the MIDI cables correctly connected? You must have Out on the 
MOTU connected to In on the Motif, but accidentally connecting Through  on the 
Motif back to In on the MOTU, instead of connecting Out on the Motif to In on 
the MOTU, would create problems like you’re describing here.
