It already is unfortunately obsolete and you haven't been able to purchase Sonar 8.5.3 for a number of years now. Plus newer software supports the use of newer standards for writing audio affects and softsynths such as VST3 which Sonar 8.5.3 never supported.

Hi Dave

My circumstances is the same as yours as in working full time etc. It is just a pitty with all the work put into scripts for cakewalk and CT that it will eventually become obsolete. It would be fantastic if some script writers took it and ran with it.

One other comment: I hear more and more about Samplitude and Reaper as updated options for us who are blind and using multi-track recording software. I would entertain these options if it was not for the cost of Samplitude and the time involved in learning either of them. I purchased Sonar and Cake Talking in 2013 and only a year ago felt comfortable setting up new projects. When you work a full-time job and unfortunately, that job is not related in any way to recording, learning new software is not at the top of my list of things I want to do. Coodos to those involved with the many years of work put into creating and updating Cake Talking.

Hey Richard,

One of the other options to move to is Samplitude for Windows 10.
There are Jaws scripts and apparently a comprehensive tutorial available as well.

Samplitude often runs huge discounts. In fact, though I haven't had a chance to do the install yet and move forward, I did get Pro 4 for just $150. Great deal.

I'll be getting a new pc built and new Jaws fairly soon.

Hi everyone

Just an update on my editing issue.  I worked a bit at it last night.
I managed to edit the track thanks to utilizing some of the advice you
all gave me.  So thanks for that.

However, there was one bar on the track which would not let me edit it
in any way.  I ended up undoing a previous cut and paste and then
inserting
the
same copy into a previous bar on the track and this allowed me to do
the necessary edits.

So thanks for the good advice.

Bill I didn't realise what had transpired with Cakewalk and Dancing
Dots
etc
so thanks for explaining the change in circumstances.  Also, thanks
for
the
suggestions which I will keep for future reference.

Where I totally understand  your position in relation to Cakewalk it
is
sad
really that the new company didn't take the opportunity to build upon
the good work and advances made in making cakewalk accessible.  At the
end of the day the visually impaired lose out.  I suppose people like
me will continue to use Cakewalk and Caketalk until it becomes unreliable.

Quite a few people  are talking about Reaper now so maybe that is the
future.  I don't know enough about the software yet.

Hi Richard,

As you may know, all of the assets of Cakewalk Music Software, the
company,
were acquired a couple of years ago by a company called BandLab.
Dancing Dots can no longer supply licenses for SONAR 8.5 as we had
under our
special
arrangement with Cakewalk.  Consequently, we no longer supply new
units or upgrades of CakeTalking and we no longer offer any kind of
free tech support.  We are happy to offer general support through
forums like this
one
but we officially have discontinued sales and support for both SONAR
and CakeTalking for SONAR.

That being said, if any customer is unable to resolve technical
issues, we are available for a paid technical consultation.  But first
see what you
can
do with help from all of the nice people on this list.

Here are some things to try that I would recommend to anyone running
CakeTalking 8.8.

...

CakeTalking 8.8 Utilities for SONAR 8.5

Reminder: CakeTalking 8.8 only works properly under Windows7 or
earlier
with
JAWS 16 or earlier. Although it may appear to install properly under
more recent versions of Windows and JAWS, it will not run reliably.

To reset SONAR's ToolBar settings to the proper values for CakeTalking
8.8 and to confirm that your Windows settings are correct, take the
following
actions:

Close all programs.

From the CakeTalking entry on the Start Menu, run the following two
utilities from the CakeTalking 8.8 submenu

ResetSONARToolbars
CheckWindowsSettings

If necessary, refer to the CakeTalking settings document for your
version
of
Windows found in CakeTalking's Setup folder. It contains detailed
instructions on how to configure Windows to work optimally with
CakeTalking.
You should find a shortcut to that folder on the submenu of the
CakeTalking
8.8 entry on the Windows Start Menu. The name of these documents
begins
with
"1Settings".

Next, run SONAR 8.5 and see if performance of CakeTalking 8.8 has
improved.

Note that if you have any earlier version of CakeTalking, your only
option to reset tool bars and other settings back to their default
original
values
is to reinstall CakeTalking.

Gosh if that system was configured a few years a go I would be amazed
if
all
of the settings are still intact. You could always check those as D J
X suggested.

Hi DJX

Thanks so much for getting back to me and I am delighted you are
asking loads of questions.  My answers are under each question below
if that is ok.

Hello Richard,

1.       Are you certain that CT is configured correctly, all toolbars,
screen resolution, windows color scheme etc? Read the setting up
guides in the CT folders in documents if you are not sure.

Answer: I purchased the full set-up from Dancing  Dots a few years ago.
They installed all relevant software so I assume the settings are correct.
The system was working properly but I have just noticed this
particular issue recently.

2.       Try using f9 and f10 to mark from and through, does that make a
difference? Go to bar 10, press f9 to mark from, then press number 2
on
the
numbers row to jump 2 bars forward to bar 12 (the beginning of it)
then press f10 to mark the through point. Then press ctrl plus enter.
Does it still highlight the entire track?

Answer: I normally use shift and f9 to insert the bars.  I will try
what
you
are suggesting tonight when I go home.

3.       If you are working with MIDI data only, what happens if you just
press the delete key (the one next to the insert and end keys in the
center
cluster of keys)?

Answer: I am using a laptop.  There are two delete keys but  they are
not beside the insert key.  One delete key is on the top row of keys,
third in from the right and the other delete key is directly below on
the second
row
from the top.  When I press the delete without selecting nothing happens.

4.       Have you tried selecting things in another project? Does that
work?

Answer: Yes I tried deleting a few bars in another project.  It worked
first
time but I could not get it to work a second time.

5.       Are you sure that you are in the custom CakeTalking tab?

Answer: Yes definitely I am in the custom tab

6.       Has your sighted friend messed with items on the screen in
Sonar's
windows?

Answer: It is possible that he changed something without realizing it
but
he
is normally pretty clued into that sort of thing.  Is there a way to
reset just in case?

7.       Finally, and I should have probably asked this first, what
version
of JAWS and Windows are you using?

Answer: I am using Jaws 16 and Windows 7.  This hasn't changed from
the original set-up by Dancing Dots.  I don't have the computer linked
to the internet to avoid possible updates.

I am going to go back at it tonight.

Thanks again for all your help.

Richard

Hi all

Hopefully you can help with this:

I am trying to remove a few bars from the middle of a recording.  I
seem
to
be having a few anomalies.

Here's what I am doing:

1 I am setting the from and through, for example, pressing shift and
f9, typing numbers 10 into in the from tab.  Tab once to the through
tab and typing 12.  So my from and through is bar 10 to bar 12.

2 pressing control enter to select the track.  Jaws reads the track
name
and
says I have selected from bar 10 to bar 12.  I have a sighted friend
with
me
and he said that although jaws states that the track has been selected
from
bar 10 to bar 12 on the screen he can see that the entire track has
been selected.

3 I proceed with pressing control delete which gives a number of
options
and
allows me to tick the option to delete the whole clip and not just the
content.

4 I end up deleting the full track instead of the piece I have selected.

I am not sure what to do next.  Any advice?

Richard
