Hi Tim,

I was able to set the drum machine to "through" and that did it! Now both
machines are being triggered at the same time.

Thanks very much!

OK, if you want to keep Sonar in charge you could get a 1 into 2 MIDI Thru
box: plug the MIDI Out of your interface into the MIDI In of the Thru box.
You can then plug a drum machine's MIDI In port into each output of the Thru
box and you'll be OK. You'll need to set the MIDI receive channels of the
two machines to be different, otherwise they'll both play the same parts.

Best wishes.

Hi Tim,

Yes, you're right the first drum machine only has in and out. The reason I
want to have sonar control the midi chain is so that it sets the tempo. I
tried switching the second drum machine for the first and again, only the
first machine is triggered by sonar.

I will keep trying things.

Thank you Tim and tina.

OK, and you're sure that you're using a Thru port from the first machine and
not an Out port (an awful lot of drum machines only provide In and Out
ports)? The difference is that the Thru port transmits an exact copy of the
information received at the In port. An Out port will only transmit data
generated by the unit that the port is fitted to (i.e. your first drum
machine).

An alternative approach would be to use your first drum machine as the
master unit for the whole system, so you'd press the Start, Stop and Record
buttons on the first drum machine to control those actions within Sonar -
let me know if you want to give this a try.

Best wishes.

Hi Tim,

I do have only one midi out from my Presonus Firepod. The midi chain looks
good: midi out, to drum machine 1, through to drum machine 2.
Manually pressing start on drum machine 1 will set both off at the same
time. However, pressing record with Sonar only triggers the first drum
machine. It's like the signal isn't getting over to the second drum machine
this way. It must be a Sonar setting because I've tried it at a friend's
place, using a different program than Sonar and both drum machines trigger
fine. In fact we then added a third sampler to the chain and all triggered
as expected.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Is there a Sonar setting to only trigger the first device?

Stacy

Hi,

You've got some options here:

Method A:

1 - Connect the MIDI Out of your interface to the MIDI In of the first drum
machine;

2 - Connect the MIDI Thru of the first drum machine (assuming it has one) to
the MIDI In of the second drum machine - this ensures that both machines
receive everything sent out by the interface;

3 - Set the MIDI receive channels on the drum machines to be different
(this means that you can address them individually and means that you could
even create combination kits).

Method B:

1 - If your interface has a spare MIDI Out port, connect the MIDI In of each
drum machine to its own MIDI Out on the interface. You don't need to change
the MIDI receive channels for this method.

Best wishes.

Subject: [ddots-l] Sonar is only triggering one midi device in the chain

Hi,

I have 2 midi drum machines connected via midi cables. When I play one, the
other one plays with matched tempo etc.

However, when I run a midi cable out of my Presonus firepod audio controller
midi out, with sonar acting as the main midi controller, only the first
drum machine is activated. I press R for record with sonar and only the
first drum machine plays. I unplug the midi cable from my sound card and
press play on the first drum machine and then both will play.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,

Stacy
