HI people. Listening to what has been said, I think if I am to
seriously continue with sonar I need to upgrade my system. I think
it's a pointless exercise upgrading my current laptop as it is over 3
years old and has been heavily used. Therefore, I am asking you all
for recommendations here forth. I assume a desktop system would
probably decrease the cost somewhat and therefore I will probably opt
for this as its not as if a mixing desk, condenser microphones,
monitors etc are particularly portable. If I look at standard desktop
computers that I can choose the various customizations, I can probably
get a very good model for around £400 to £500 (English money). Digital
Audio Work Stations seem to run in to the thousands. This is basically
what I would like:

Two spinning drives. One for audio, one for the main ware.

I intend to use this computer for audio work only.
Therefore, I have no need for Microsoft office, games or any of that
stuff that is installed on home computers.
I do not intend to use my computer on the internet.
If possible I will use my laptop to download various plugins and then
copy them over to my audio computer.
I would like to be able to run softsynths and soundfonts successfully.
At the moment, this is an impossibility with my laptop.
I do not intend to use gigastudio or anything too intensive like that.
Obviously I want something that is quick, efficient, and will work with sonar.
I have a USB sound card which may be what I choose to install in the
short term. This would mean I would be able to record in a separate
room from my desktop computer, eradicating fan noise. I imagine the
really quiet computers cost even more as a result, so I should really
avoid such a price increase and use such a work around.
I think that's everything.
I don't intend to produce over 44 kHz 16 bit as all my work is going
on to CD or MP3, wMA for radio broadcast.
Plugins of course I will be using but I think all this goes without saying.

I know a lot of you are very familiar with this field and I am sure
with your help, I will be much further forward.

I know this isn't directly on topic but it is leading to the on topic,
if you understand my meaning.

Thanks

David Eagle
