Ok Guys, This might be long, but if you are interested in the whole 432 thing, here is what I've found. Someone told me about 432 a year or so ago. I tried it for about a minute and then tuned up again. I thought it was pretty, but not worth the hassle of constently going back and forth. Then last week a friend sent me a link to a YouTube video where a guy was talking about the spiritual benefits of 432. I am a Christian, and this particular gentleman is someone I'm familiar with and have great respect for, not only as a minister of the gospel, but also as a guitarist...seriously great player. Before watching the video, I tuned my Goodall acoustic guitar to A432HZ. This time was much different than the last time I tried it. It was wonderful! And yes Chris, it's just a wee bit south of A440Hz. My Goodall is an incredible instrument, and I have taken very good care of it. But there have always been a couple of spots where the fourths and fifths didn't match up quite right. I thought it might be the angle of my arm as the condition that caused my blindness also destroyed my elbow, and I don't have full rotation of my wrist. But after tuning to 432Hz, poof! Those intonation trouble spots were gone! Just gone! My guitar is perfect! Then I watched the video. This guy said some pretty radical things, and with no one home but my happy pit bull Bo, I started yelling at the guy on the video saying "How do you know that?" As I said, he was saying some things that were just incredible if they are really true, but he wasn't giving a bunch of background. You know, like turning in a term paper without any references. So, I started to my own digging on the Internet. Before all this came up, my wife and I watched a documentary on Net Flicks, a Nova documentary called "At The Edge Of Space." Its about Sprites. No, not the mythical creatures or the soda. Sprites are lightning flashes that go up from a storm cloud to the ionesphere instead of down to the ground. My wife said the photography is breathtaking. Anyway, they interview this scientist who lives out in the wilderness of Maine. He tracks these sprites when they occur anywhere on earth. He uses low-tech gear from the 50s. Hang with me guys, this gets good. He monitors the frequency of the earth. He says the earth runs at roughly 8Hz, and any time there is a sprite occurance on the planet, his equipment sees it because, like the string of a violin, the whole cavity between the ionesphere and the surface of the earth vibrates. It is called the Schumann resonance. From Wikipedia: The Schumann resonances (SR) are a set of spectrum peaks in the extremely low frequency (ELF) portion of the Earth's electromagnetic field spectrum. Schumann resonances are global electromagnetic resonances, excited by lightning discharges in the cavity formed by the Earth's surface and the ionosphere. What does this have to do with 432? When you increase 8Hz by five octaves, 16Hz, 32Hz, 64Hz, 128Hz, and finally 256Hz, which happens to be a C. The "A" in that octave is 432Hz. This tuning is called by many names, Verdi tuning, Pethagoran tuning, or Scientific tuning. There's much to unpack with this whole thing, but since I've already written a book here, I will mention one more point. This tuning yields an array of frequencies in chordal harmony contexts that most of us have never heard at any time before in our lives because music has been for the vast majority of us based on an A440Hz standard. That is very intreiguing to me. So, I was sitting in front of my TV playing my Goodall and listening to Jimmy Fallon. Here comes One Republic playing there number 1 hit song in America, and I started jamming with them. Suddenly I stopped, and started laughing and saying "No way!" I was in 432 and so were they, at least on the Fallon show! Maybe I was just tired though. If you got this far, guess what? I'm done! Anyway, the standard has shifted over the years. some orchestras are up to 445 now.
