Honestly, I can't recommend this more highly! The ideas in this little book will be old hat to some of you; But, they are in ever more need of repeating in this age of Youtube "lessons" and instant gratification. Brief review follows:

Every so often, a small book appears which condenses a ton of knowledge, wisdom and experience, into bite-sized chunks. The Elements of Style is one such book for writers. First, Learn to practice, should become one such book for musicians!

If, like me, you had a piano teacher who never tought you how to practice effectively, and you carried this lack of information and dread of practicing into your adult life, you need this book. It contains tried and true wisdom on practicing, the right information to help musicians of all kinds develop and sustain a practice regimen, and a love for the mere experience of practicing. Mr. heany presents things so simply they seem like common sense. But, as we know, common sense isn't so common. Key concepts are repeated throughout, but not enough to become annoying; but rather, just enough to reinforce the fundamental ideas. Highly recommended!
