I also use an echo indigo on my laptop, and it has no MIDI features-only audio, (and quite good audio at that). It'll show up in your audio drivers in the Options/Audio options menu , but not in the MIDI devices page under Options/Midi devices.

Many thanks! So now here's round 2. What is the advantage of using my keyboard as a MIDI device? I could go through a mixer and use it as as just an audio input couldn't I? Also, I know I'll have to choose the keyboard as a MIDI out, but before it's installed, why does nothing show up for the MIDI out? I have an Echo Indigo sound card. Shouldn't that be able to be used as a MIDI output device? ! I used to do editing with tape in college, but that was YEARS ago! I've REALLY wanted to get back into all this, but have just had one hell of a block! Thanks again. Dave Again, thank you for your patience. I've had some of this stuff FOREVER Candles for Christmas? http://www.candledream.scent-team.com/home.php -----Original Message----- From: ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of James Murphy Sent: Thursday, December 21, 2006 6:26 PM To: ddots-l@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [ddots-l] Re: A SUPER BEGINNER Question Excellent answer! Sean is right in that the "noMIDIdevice attached/selected" message has everything to do with what typeofMIDI interface, either internal or external midi card you plan onusingyour computer/Sonar to communicate through, (e.g. sound blaster, edirol um, etc.), and not the keyboard or module being used for input/output. Thepart about which musical instrument you use for actually playing and / or hearing sounds comes under selecting an instrument to go with your MIDI deviceasfar as Sonar and your computer are concerned-- two different things:1.midi device; 2. instrument definition. So if we limit ourselves to the "nomididevice attached/selected" message then we can say Dave you don't needtophysically connect your keyboard before choosing a device. However in Dave's specific case since he plans on going through USBforhis midi needs then one has to say yes indeed he would first have toconnecthis midi keyboard before choosing a device because his midi device andmidimusical instrument are all in one. I hope that helps. Merry Christmas to you all, Nicki D -----Original Message----- From: ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx[mailto:ddots-l-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Kevin L. He's talking about the MIDI devices dialog in sonar and that expects a keyboard on the input side and modules or theoutput ofthe keyboard on the output side. So, yes, his device is a keyboard.Theaudio connections are irrelevant to this. They need to be connectedviaMidi or USB. So, yes, you have to connect your USB keyboard beforeyouconnect select an input device. What it is asking for, is the device you use to connect your MIDI in and outs to your computer such as an FW1884 or a SoundBlaster Live etc. If you purchased your system from Dancing Dots, give them a call andfindout what device you purchased. If not, Feel free to give me a callandI'll be happy to guide you through finding out. Sincerely, Sean A. But now my wife wants results from all the dough I've sunk into this stuff. I'm using Sonar 5.2 with the appropriate CakeTalking scripts. When I load Sonar 5, I get a message saying I don't have any MIDI device chosen. I assume this would be the keyboard which is indeed not hooked up yet. I have a cable that will let me hook up the keyboard via USB. Does it have to be connected for me to choose a MIDI device?Couldn't I just plug the keyboard in using a quarter inch plugthroughthe mixer? But then how would I choose a MIDI device? HELP!
