Dear all There has been a great deal of discussion on this forum on the subject of using water mist in residential/domestic properties and we'd like to bring a few items to the table: a) The government in this country has contracted BRE to carry out research into DD251 and DD252 specifically aimed at looking at the applicability of sprinkler protection for residential and domestic properties. Given this and the fact that a great deal more is known about sprinkler protection than water mist, we do feel that advocating water mist AT THIS STAGE is perhaps putting the cart before the horse. b) Regardless of whether water mist is pumped or pressurised from a cylinder, the equipment needs to be properly tested and ideally, maintained. Whilst other fire equipment for use in such properties is not maintained as a whole it has however been thoroughly tested and approved. Where water mist is being installed, what confidence can the supplier give to the user that in years to come the equipment will function? c) There is no doubt that water mist has its advantages but these are still being discovered and quantified. Currently the technology is very application specific and has yet to be proven in 'generic' situations which domestic and residential occupancies are. Water mist is more susceptible to risk variables such as ventilation and room geometry and these aspects are still being investigated. This is an interesting debate and no doubt it will run for some time.
