Shakespeare in Audio Description - Association for the Blind of WA - Wednesday 1 February 2012 http://www.guidedogswa.com.au/articles/latest-news/shakespeare-in-audio-description On Wednesday 1 February 2012 Shakespeare WA will stage an audio described performance of The Comedy of Errors directed by Paige Newmark as part of the 2012 Shakespeare in the Park season in Kings Park and Botanic Garden. In 2011, with the help of live sign language interpreters, Shakespeare WA successfully staged a performance for the Deaf Association. In 2012, the company wanted to reach out to another community group and approached the Association for the Blind of WA to find out how they could perform their own live audio described performance. Shakespeare WA is committed to providing theatre for everyone from every social stratum, and in particular, those who would not normally see the plays of Shakespeare. Audio description refers to an additional narration track on visual media (including television, film, dance, opera and visual art) for consumers who are blind or vision impaired. It consists of a narrator speaking throughout the presentation, describing what's happening on the stage during natural pauses in dialogue, and sometimes during discussion if deemed necessary. Thanks to the generosity of McDonald's stores in Western Australia, who donated $20,000 toward Audio Description services, the Association has purchased equipment to provide 25 clients the chance to experience the performance.
