More voters than not believe a pro-independence “supermajority” at the
Holyrood elections would justify a new referendum.
A Panelbase poll for The Sunday Times found that, when “don’t knows”
were excluded, 55 per cent of those surveyed agreed that a second vote
would be merited if a two-thirds majority was secured on May 6 by the
SNP, Greens and Alex Salmond’s Alba Party.
The parties would have to win at least 86 of the 129 available seats but
even then, 45 per cent of voters disagreed that it would justify a
second referendum.
Salmond has said that independence negotiations with Boris Johnson, the
prime minister, should begin on the first day of the new parliamentary
term if a supermajority — defined in the 2016 Scotland Act as two thirds
of MSPs in the Scottish parliament — is achieved.
Nicola Sturgeon said it was time to “knock on the head the requirement
for a supermajority” for a referendum and that only a “simple majority”
for a poll was required. She has ruled out any kind of deal with Salmond.
The Panelbase poll of 1,009 voters suggested a 50-50 split over whether
or not demands for a second referendum would be justified if the SNP
achieved an absolute majority. This would require Sturgeon’s party to
win at least 65 seats.
As revealed by this newspaper last week, the Panelbase poll indicated
that the SNP, Greens and Alba combined could win 79 seats. Other polls
have suggested that their gains could be higher.
On the question of whether Holyrood would be justified in declaring
independence without a referendum and beginning negotiations to leave
the UK if there was a supermajority, fewer than half of Scots (44 per
cent) agreed with Salmond. Excluding don’t knows, 56 per cent said they
would be opposed to doing so, and that number dropped to 36 per cent if
don’t knows are included.
