Here are three that irk me:
1. Proper vetting of participants
2. Apparent bias toward certain regions
3. Very low levels of competition
These are all probably interrelated, but it just bothers me that a
"legitimate" organisation that provides national representation runs
tournaments at Stofkerk Hoer Skool in Wakanda with Abdul Lebogang Van
Niekerk and his parents, siblings and pet hamster as the top participants
so often.

ye breh, that Knysna thing never happened. we planned to get a bus an
roadtrip it down we looked at accommodations too, but like as time went on,
we didn't hear of anything solid other than the initial date and place.
nobody confirmed and so we didn't book, and then like 2 days before the
event we hear it was cancelled.

Out of interest, when did the last WC champs take place that any of you
heard about? I mean heard about before the date, not just some updated
after it had happened.

I think having stu on the board is already a plus.
that means things are moving ahead. first of all, we need a bigger
presence in WC.
2ndly, have more announcements and stick to the deadline, planning needs
to be better. We almost went to last years kuk in knysna which was
cancelled like 2 days before the event. don't do stuff like that. plan
properly, with having the most participants in mind.
3rdly, no laggy kuk screens, everything needs to be updated, and rule kuk
about ft1 needs to be updated.

Okay, so I’ve joined the e-sported board. There are 4 of us on it so far –
1 CS:GO player, a LOL player, me and Ryan (the guy from Vexxed). Our job is
to figure out what’s gone so badly wrong with MSSA over the past few years
and what we can do to fix it. I’ve got some ideas, but was wondering if
anyone else had any feedback.
Things that I’m thinking of:
1. The Swiss scoring system. It’s not intuitive and it’s not used
by any FG tournaments anywhere in the world. Think about double elim.
2. The Provincial champs – they’re a mess and Western Cape has
missed out a few times. Not sure how to fix this. Maybe online tournaments.
Hold multiple tourneys. If you’ve hit top 3 in a tournament, you can’t play
in another one. Top 3 players in each tournament get invited to Team
Trials. Maybe have a league (although this is a lot of effort and people
are slack).
3. Refs – there are zero refs in MSSA who know about fighting
games. Most of the time when I’m at a tournament they ask me for
input/help. That’s fine, but as a player it shouldn’t happen. Maybe get
other people to do the ref course (it’s 1 day or something), then pay them
to ref at any local MSSA event.
4. Fix the MSSA rules – a bunch of the stuff in there is insane,
like the clauses about not accidentally ripping on someone, and the fines
that can be imposed. The rules were written by a lawyer and it shows.
5. More involvement from the community at high school level. A load
of schools have e-sports teams, but in terms of fighting games, they have
zero idea what they’re doing. See about going to schools and fixing thing.
Those were the first ones that came off the top of my head. A lot of the
flack MSSA has taken in the past years is due to two things – firstly,
making claims that failed. The Western Cape is an example of this. The
female players leagues is another. The second issue has been Colin’s
interaction with the SA community. This has been a fail. The SAGamer thread
is a good example.
So, regardless of anyone’s opinion on MSSA, the fact that you can get a
free trip to World’s and get to play some of the best people out there
(like Book or Jeondding), should be a massive draw. It’s not. People don’t
bother to attend tournaments. Half the Tekken players there are people who
just arrived on the day or high school kids who think that learning a
10-string is the way to win.
Firstly, does anyone here think that this is salvageable? Is there any
hope for getting the FGC in SA involved in e-sports? Is so, what is needed
to change?
