The word commitment can be swapped out for faith there and we all know
faith never built any airplanes or sewer systems.
If the core philosophy of the game is mumbo jumbo crap then anything they
build on top of it will be crap too.

Lazy uninspired devs + a ravenous audience that will throw money at any new
game regardless of how complete it is = the situation in which we find
ourselves.
And buying the games ironically to slag them off or in hopes that something
will come right still pays capcom or whoever the same money.

My impression of SFV is that the dev team just took random mechanics from
various games, coupled it with their own (mostly bad) design decisions,
marketed it with a philosophy that didn't really exist in previous titles
("commitment") and expected it to be a good game.

For example, the game has an Alpha Counter. Great. Except there are
virtually no blockstrings (some chains aren't blockstrings!) and you can
still mash DPs to beat them. So what's the point?

They added Crush Counters, which in theory should be a fantastic frame
trapping tool, except that frame traps are extremely weak because normals
have terrible frame data on block. In other words, you can just get jabbed
out of your Crush Counter. No instead of trying to make these moves
better, they add yet another mechanic - punishing a reversal on block now
nets you a counter hit. That's completely the opposite of what a counter
hit is.

Moves are so bad on block (besides the terrible hitboxes) that it's risky
to even to stuff like cr.mk xx hadou because it's punishable at most
ranges. And if you don't cancel, the opponent gets frame advantage! Ryu's
sweep in SFV is -7f on block. In SFIV it's -14f. And it's about 10x more
punishable in SFV because of non-existent pushback. Explain that. Capcom
just doesn't know how to design fighting games any more.

The stages are just as big as SFIV, but walkspeeds are slower and normals
are worse and zoning is extremely weak. What does this mean? A lot of
walking back and forth doing nothing because your normals are too weak to
reach and throw fireballs is risky. That's why the game is slower than
SFIV.

I like the idea of going back to fundamentals, but this game just looks
like a worse version of Alpha 2 x 3rd Strike. Why would I want to play it
when there are better options?

Fair enough, but I can honestly say that I don't buy your reasons. It's
like you're just saying what you've read elsewhere.

How often have ever gotten hit by an OS in SFIV? You've probably escaped
pressure with noob-friendly backdashes and mashing exponentially more often
than you actually got punished with an OS.

Read backdash and punish with Ultra? Why would you do that? Backdashes
don't have hit invincibility. cr.lp into DP? That's just not going to
happen unless you're mashing, but the fact that it's even an option on
defense is a BAD thing.

Do you know how weak throws are in this game? Smaller range and slower
than SFIV. Not only that, but they removed kara throws in the latest
build. Yes, read that again.

The game is SLOWER than SFIV at higher levels of play for reasons I will
elaborate on in my next mail about why I don't think it's such a good game.

No OS. I don't like that you can cover yourself from different
eventualities depending on what the opponent does. You read backdash into
ultra like a man. you read a throw or you get crlp into dp.

I like that you can build-a-combo with v-trigger. so you have your
normal bnb's but if you have v trigger you can add onto your bnb.

No focus kuk, which ties into No OS paragraph coz you must press a
button and get opened up or get thrown.

Theres a stun gauge so more fraudulent wins are abundant.

easy combos can lead to big damage if you have meter.

faster recovery on knockdown. game looks faster than sf4.

I think that's about all I can gather.

On the weapon side, it’s important for crusader builds – those flails or
shields with specific abilities.

For everyone else, I dunno. What elements do you use? I’m tempted to put
together a frost leap-quake Barb and put Rimeheart as the weapon thing.
Throw in the new iceblink gem and it’s looking much better. On the armour
side, either the leap boots, or frostburn. Hmmm. Actually a straight HotA
build using the same might be fun.

Did you try to fun normal/GRs? Ran a TX normal rift. Was fine. Ran a 50
GR and it was fine. Didn’t die in either of those and finished with a
couple of minutes to spare.

I needs the Hammerdin set.
