Hello Rainer,
Some answers to your questions. When I worked at CP in Winnipeg
in the early 1970's we had a cleaning track at the Southside Yard
Office. One of my jobs was to check the cleaning track on a nightly
bases. We had lots of 29000 series through baggage cars in there for
time to time. Most of which were still in freight colours. As I
recall there was at the very leased 2/3's painted in freight colours.
And the balance panited in passenger colours. I was told by a senior
company offical that the reason the cars were painted in that
fashion. Was that when these cars became empties on the line, freight
crews could pick up the cars without charging or getting a higher
rate for handling passenger equipment. I don't know how true this is,
but I do recall an engine crew putting in a ticket for handling
private cars on one occation. Their where a couple of 29000 series
cars that where panit aluminum with a tuscan red name plate with
Canadian Pacific in yellow lettering. And the balance of the
lettering in tuscan red. A friend of mind seen a aluminum box car in
a work train in the mountians with the tuscan red name plate still in
view. Also the 29000 series cars that were panited in tuscan red some
had black end and roof's. And others had only black roof's tuscan
red sides and ends.
As for proof of this equipment painted in freight colours all
you have to do is look through D.M. Bain's picture book's CPR in the
Rockies. In Vol.1 page 15, date 1952, Kettle Valley Express Train 11.
Behind motive power are two freight panited 29000 series boxes. In
Vol.2 page 18, Train 11 is at Ladner Creek bridge behind the
locomotives are two freight painted 29000 series boxes. In Vol.3 page
24 Train 11 has behind engines 60 ft wooden baggage car, freight
panited 29000 series box, freight panited 280000 ice reffer, five
more freight panited 29000 series boxes, 80 ft B&E, 80 ft M&E, four
heavyweight cars. All these photo's taken between 1951 - 1953.
Even in N. Morant's Canadian Pacific on the Contents page is a
photo KVE train 11 on the Ladner Creek bridge in the fall of 1952.
With on less than four freight panited 29000 series boxes behind the
motive power.
I do know that all the numbers where not used in this series.
As for the 29114-29199 group 10 of these became the 4900-4909 time
cars. About 15 cars where scraped, and the balance were converted
into material stores cars in work train service. As far as I know nun
of these cars went back into the 226000-228799.
In 1970 only 86 cars of this series remained in service.
Hope this helps you out.
Regards,
Fred Shannon

Pondering Jim's comments on these boxcars, more questions
have arisen than answers. First, were all of the 180 cars from
the 226000-228799 series that were upgraded for passenger
service in 1943 to the 29019-29199 series repainted to the
tuscan/black scheme at that time? Were any returned to oxide
red? Other than the 10 cars converted for bulk mail and
renumbered 4901-4910 in 1967, were any others painted
aluminum with the tuscan lettering? I don't have any Equipment
Registers other than portions of the 1972 version in the back
of Dorin's CPR book. There it appears to indicates that 29019
-29113 were the only straight boxcars suitable for passenger
service. Where did 29114-29199 go and when? BTW, the
initial information is from Yaremko's "Canadian Rail Car Pictorial
- Vol.1"
