John: Murray Dean and David Hanna's book on CP Diesel Locomotives say that
CP obtained quotes from all the builders for the Wells River dieselization. FM
and Baldwin
were elimated for various reasons. GM was found to have higher prices and poor
delivery dates so Alco
got the order. CP figured GM tracton motors were less rugged and the units had
a lower
continuous T.E. They also preferred Alco 40 inch dia. wheels over GM 36 inch
dia.
By this time, CP had quite a few Alco switchers and this might have influenced
the order
in Alco's favour.
CP received their first GM cab units in 1951 and first GP7s in 1952.

Subject: [cpsig] dieselization of the CPR's Vermont line
(I'm not sure if the CPR owned
any EMD/GMD power at all in early 1949). Does anyone have
authoritative information to shed light on this aspect, i.e. why did
the CPR purchase ALCo, and not EMD, road freight power for its Vermont
operations?
