I had a discussion about the car in the photo with members of the Early Rails
group. While pay cars and hunting cars came up, details of the photo and the
one below on the page, showing the car on different passenger trains, suggest
that it was instead a combined baggage/railway post office car. The walkway
allowed communication between the passenger cars through the baggage section
and the engine without the conductor entering the mail area.
I've been told John H. White's History of American Passenger Cars shows other
cars of this type. It looks like it would be an interesting model.
