Vic,

Was there a difference in billing? I always thought a one hundred car unit train operated on one bill rather than 100 separate bills.

Also re pre sixties unit trains, cars operated in a unit train could and were generally operated as single cars on a day to day basis. Unit cars of today are assigned equipment in most cases and would generally never be used singly.

They didn't start with Fording.  I was billing them out of Coleman
Collieries in Coleman, AB before Fording was even built.  They were also
originating out of the Natal - Michel area (Cranbrook Sub) for decades
before that.  Seems like potash trains out of Kalium (Indian Head Sub)
and several potash mines on the Sutherland Sub had them since at least
the 60's too.
